Camp Spaulding

Children of Incarcerated Parents

Children who have an incarcerated parent sometimes feel as though they are the only ones in the world in this situation.  Yet, 1 in every 28 children in the United States has an incarcerated parent.

Camp Spaulding of Child and Family Services has partnered with the Family Connections Center of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections to provide a summer camp experience for children who have a parent incarcerated in the New Hampshire State Prison system (Concord, Goffstown, Berlin) and is involved in the Family Connections Center.

The Children of Incarcerated Parents (CIP) summer camp program was created to help these children realize that they are not alone, to share experiences with other children in similar situations, to have a traditional summer camp adventure, and get one or two amazing visits with their incarcerated parent.

At Camp Spaulding, these children will have the opportunity to experience two weeks of overnight camping on 55 acres of forest along the Contoocook River.  Adventures include –

  • swimming
  • canoeing
  • horseback riding
  • high and low ropes challenge courses
  • arts & crafts
  • theatre games
  • archery
  • hiking

  • CIP campers will have the added benefit of enjoying some extra activities that are specially designed for them.
  • After the first week at camp, CIP campers will take a field trip to the prison to spend some quality time with their incarcerated parent.  The days will feature traditional camp activities and each parent and child(ren) will create a large mural that will be publicly displayed after camp and will eventually go home to the child.

CIP special camp session:  August 11 – 22

Having an incarcerated parent places a huge financial burden on the family left behind.  The total cost for a full, two-week session for a CIP is $1,000.  This pays for the camp costs, the transportation costs to the prison and food and art supplies for the prison visit, as well as for the artist in residence. We hope to have all of CIP campers go to camp for FREE!
